Basic Electronics

The Basic Electronic Course presented at UMF-TC includes the following:

Basic Training Electronics (2 Weeks)
  • Soldering of components
  • Identification of resistors, diodes and inductors and
    the use there-of
  • Using an oscilloscope
  • Construct rectification circuits
  • Identify and use Zener diodes
  • Construct basic electronic circuits
  • Identify transistor action and transistor configurations
  • Test regulated power supplies
Advanced Training
  • Using a transistor as a switch
  • Test multi-vibrators
  • Construct a continuity tester
  • Test a field effect transistor
  • Fault-find circuits
  • Test electronic systems

The Basic Hand Tools/Skills course presented at UMF-TC includes the following:

  • Read engineering drawings
  • Identify materials
  • Handle material safely
  • Draw up a material list
  • Use hand tools
  • Operate a pedestal grinder
  • Sharpen a drill
  • Operate a pedestal drilling machine
  • Operate a portable drilling machine
  • Operate a portable grinder

Basic Rigging

The Basic Rigging Course presented at UMF-TC includes the following:

  • General lifting equipment – general inspection and safe use of lifting equipment
  • Lifting equipment – chain block, coffin hoist, wire rope winch, reeve block, snatch block, turn buckle and winches.
  • Hand signals
  • Check and use ladders
  • Safety belts
  • Crane components and inspections

Basic Welding

The Basic Welding Course presented at UMF-TC includes the following:

  • Read engineering drawings
  • Draw up a material list
  • Operate a portable grinder
  • Identify materials
  • Handle material safely
  • Use oxy-acetylene cutting and welding equipment
  • Use arc welding equipment
  • Bead and weave weld
  • Weld a fillet and corner joint
  • Weld a butt-joint

Junior Engineer

This course was designed to give the junior engineer some practical experience during or after completion of his/her studies.
The course consists of modules taken from all trades:

Theory
  • Electrical training – 30 days
  • Mechanical training – 37 days
  • Plater/Welder – 21 days
