These competencies are obtained in the well-equipped workshops of UMF-TTC.
Training, Venues and Periods:
Training consists of periods of training at UMF-TTC, a Technical College (if required) and at the relevant employer.
Training at UMF-TTC is divided into three periods:
- Introduction to the Trade
- Basic
- Advanced
- Final – leading towards a Trade Test Examination.
The courses are written in a competency modular outcomes-based and unit standard format. This simply means that the knowledge to be obtained is actually stipulated.
On completion of his/her Basic training, the student reverts back to his/her relevant employer and does practical, on-the-job training. A specific programme needs to be followed.
Training includes all work he/she has received during Basic training at UMF-TTC, on the relevant equipment as used by his/her employer.
During this period he/she must prove competency by doing prescribed tasks on which he/she must be found and certified competent by his/her supervisor. The student/trainee is assessed throughout his/her training programme.
Once competent, the student will be called into UMF-TTC for Advanced training.
On completion of his/her Advanced training, the student reverts back to the relevant employer and does practical, on the job training, as per the specified programme.
Optional short course:
During this period the student can also be called to UMF-TTC for courses relevant to the trade.
On completion of the Compulsory Prescribed Tasks, the student will be called into UMF-TTC for his/her Final training. During this period he/she will be trained in all aspects of the relevant trade in preparation for the Trade Test.
The actual Trade Test is done on the premises of UMF-TTC on equipment as prescribed by the QCTO.
On passing this Trade Test, the student will receive a QCTO certificate of competence for the relevant trade.
